Celia Hart

Hart Celia CrocusesI produce hand burnished linocuts and woodcuts printed onto Japanese papers.

My work is inspired by the East Anglian countryside, gathering ideas as I walk the footpaths near my studio on the Cambs/Suffolk border. Chance encounters with animals and birds in the fields and woods are worked into compositions in my mind then hastily scribbled down when back in the studio. The designs retain the lively lines of the original sketches but evolve and become distilled as they are carved into the block.

I enjoy working in a single colour, using the negative and positive shapes and the marks of the chisels to create texture, depth and variety in the composition.

Since April 2015 I have illustrated Frank Ronan’s monthly column for Gardens Illustrated magazine with a linocut inspired by his words but including visual asides of my own.

My original prints are exhibited in galleries across the UK including Cambridge Contemporary Art. I also work for publishers and design companies supplying images for book covers and product labels. For such commissions I often combine an original print with digital work.
